Connect + Trade has a long history of creating and managing ads on Facebook, Linkedin, Google, and Bing/Yahoo. Recently American Express offered us $100 worth of the new self-managed Twitter ads for free, so we figured this was a good occasion to get familiar with these new ads and inform people of our recent name change. Ideally we would have used the @connectandtrade account, but the ad credit was tied to the old @knudr account which meant we had to be a little extra creative (as you can see in the screenshot).
Our initial impression of Twitter ads is that compared to other ad solutions is is surprisingly crude. Really all you can do is decide if you want to show your ads to the whole word, specific countries, or specific US metropolitan areas. Then you can either promote your account (you will be featured on the “who to follow” list), or you can promote your tweets. Obviously Twitter is unable to offer as precise targeting as Facebook as they simply don’t know that much about their users, but you would think they would let advertiser target based on which other accounts users follow (so you can target people who follow your competitors, or at the very least people who follow you). Another missed feature is being able to target people based on what they search for.
We will keep experimenting with and following Twitter ads, but assuming you want bang for your buck we still recommend putting your budget towards Facebook and Linkedin ads. Contact us if you want to learn more about online ads! We are always happy to discuss it.
